The GIF is an old format. In Internet terms it is ancient. It dates from 1987 and was introduced by CompuServe. It was eventually adopted for use on early web pages. But in some weird quirk of Internet reality, the GIF is back and big time. Tumblr were the first to recognize the potential and last year Facebook gave it and surrendered to the mighty GIF. The slow old format slayed the mighty Facebook dragon and took over it by storm. The reason as for why this happened deserve an article of their own, but we are here to celebrate the GIF as a form of art. The appeal and strength of the GIF as a form of art are laid in its limitations and endless possibilities.
