After 2016 everyone heard of Hilight Tribe. The Vini Vici remix to the band’s classic Free Tibet from their third album has turned into a HUGE hit, hitting #2 in the Beatport main chart (unprecedented for a psytrance track) and accumulating about 15 million (!!!) views on YouTube alone.
They spent time in Tibet and with Tibetans in India learning the language, culture, philosophies and of course music. And the song Free Tibet was born when playing atop a hill on a full moon night.
The original Free Tibet was the opening track on their third album – Love Medicine And Natural Trance – released in 2002. The band has a strong connection with Tibet and Tibetan music and culture. They spent time in Tibet and with Tibetans in India learning the language, culture, philosophies and of course music. And the song Free Tibet was born when playing atop a hill on a full moon night.
They have released 5 albums, 2 live albums and a best of compilation. and now there’s a Hilight Tribe new album – Temple of Light.
But Hilight Tribe has been there for a long time. The band, and yes, it is a real band, has been playing live trance, or as they define it, Natural Trance, since the beginning of the 90s. It all started when Greg and Ludo met, each coming from a different musical backgrounds and started Hilight. They were later joined by Seb, Rishnu, Roots and sound engineer Mathias.
The band has been performing since in countless events bringing their own unique improvised real live electronic-acoustic sound to Psytrance events and beyond. Especially memorable are their opening sets in big festivals (like the Boom Festival set you can see a photo of on the top). They have released 5 albums, 2 live albums and a best of compilation. and now there’s a Hilight Tribe new album – Temple of Light.
The band uses an endless list of instruments on their shows, among them guitar, bass, vocals, djembe, didgeridoo, Jew’s harp, sitar, n’gwani, berimbao, tabla, shruti box, Tibetan trumpet, dundun, congas, bongos, flute, drums and electronics and special FX. And this list keeps changing as they keep incorporating new instruments into their music.
We will soon publish an interview with the band about Hilight Tribe new album – Temple of Light.
