Infrequency & Friends Go Down the Rabbit Hole – Interview
Meet Infrequency, also known as Ryan Hinchman, a psybass artist and live musician hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Infrequency has just released his second album “Trip Journal” on Mindspring Music. It’s a true concept album that aims to tell the psychedelic trip experience through the medium of psychedelic downtempo. We sat down to talk to him about his music.
Listen to Trip Journal while you read:
Q: First, tell us about Infrequency. How did your musical journey start?
A: I first started djing in 2002, four years later I performed at my first event under the name Tranz-X- mainly playing psytrance/breaks/dnb. I kept the name Tranz-X- until about 2009, then dropped it and began taking my music into a different direction. The Infrequency name came around 2012 when I began creating visionary art, two years later I combined the music and art together to become Infrequency.
Q: What is the musical vision behind the project? How would you describe the music you create as Infrequency?
A: I would describe my music as “Intergalactic Underground Sounds.” The dark and mysterious sonic tones are the perfect accompaniment for interstellar travel. This is what the Infrequency concept is built from and is perpetuated through.
Q: Your new album “Trip Journal” is inspired by your own psychedelic experiences and those of friends have recounted their own to you. How did you express the “trip experience” – which can be quite powerful – into music?
3. I had this vision for Trip Journal to remind the listener of a certain experience or experiences they may have had at one time on a psychedelic, in order to do this I would partake in psychedelics during my studio sessions, this helped recreate visions in my mind that I put forth into the music, giving it a true set and setting feel. For the experiences with my friends, I would have them record their experience during peak moments of a trip, gathering what they are hearing, feeling, seeing, etc, then turning their experience into music, taking samples from their recordings and layering it throughout the songs. It gives you something that you can really relate to.

Q: Now that you have two albums under your belt, where do you see your musical path taking you in the future?
4. I have a plan to turn Infrequency in to a live band experience in the near future, until then I plan to keep creating as music as possible, and I hope to travel and perform more in the future as well, the future is bright and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
